About Arctic Bay
POPULATION: 639
TIME ZONE: Eastern
Arctic Bay is called Ikpiarjuk - "the pocket" - because of the high hills that surround the almost landlocked bay from which the community gets its name.
Arctic Bay is noted for miniature ivory carvings, traditional clothing and other arts and crafts. Stone used here is grey argillite, similar to that used in Sanikiluaq far to the south, but with brownish blotches and streaks. Carvings made from this stone are often very small, and pieces are sometimes made so that the brown markings stunningly enhance their features.
The most important tourist event of the year in both Arctic Bay and neighboring Nanisivik is a gruelling set of runs of various lengths between the two communities, the Midnight Sun Marathon. Often billed as one of the world's toughest foot races, it takes place on the weekend closest to Canada Day, July 1. The race, which attracts experienced marathoners the world over, starts in front of Taqqut Co-op in Arctic Bay.
